// Spray-Applied Cover. For The Future.

Posi-Shell and Posi-Lock are spray-applied coatings that replace imported soil for daily and intermediate landfill cover, seal in hydrogen sulphide odour, cut off the oxygen feeding subsurface hotspots, and contain contaminated or erosion-prone surfaces. With our own application plant, Core-EP designs, applies and verifies these systems as one team, backed by our landfill engineering and construction quality assurance experience.

Posi-Shell® Landfill Cover

What it does

Posi-Shell is a patented blend of clay binders, reinforcing fibres and polymers. Mixed with water (or, where approved, leachate), it forms a sprayable mortar that dries into a thin, durable, stucco-like shell over the working face or any exposed surface.

Posi-Lock® Containment

Contain. Stabilise.
Protect.

Posi-Lock is a spray-applied, mineral-based membrane that forms a durable barrier over contaminated soils and other exposed materials, helping protect air, soil and waterways by controlling dust, odour, VOC emissions and erosion.

Durability can be dialled in by adjusting the formulation and application thickness, from short-term stage covers to longer-duration stabilisation. It pairs naturally with our contaminated land, vapour and remediation services.

Odour & Hotspots Landfill Gas

Seal it in.
Starve it out.

The same continuous, low-permeability shell that replaces daily soil cover also controls two of a landfill operator’s biggest headaches: hydrogen sulphide odour and subsurface hotspots. Our landfill gas engineers pair the coating with the assessment and monitoring that make it work.

Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S) Odour

H₂S, the “rotten egg” gas, typically forms where sulphate-rich waste such as plasterboard breaks down in wet, oxygen-poor conditions. People can smell it at very low concentrations, so it is a common trigger for community complaints.

A continuous Posi-Shell layer seals exposed faces, batters and stockpiles to reduce fugitive odour release, and can be applied quickly in response to complaints or regulator notices.

Subsurface Hotspots & Landfill Fires

Subsurface oxidation events (hotspots) are sustained by air entering the waste mass through cracks, thin cover and over-drawn gas wells. Cutting off that oxygen supply is the most common method for bringing them under control.

Posi-Shell forms a continuous, low-permeability seal over the affected area to limit air intrusion and starve the hotspot of oxygen. Our landfill gas engineers can also review your gas extraction and monitoring so air isn’t drawn back in.

FAQ Questions

Common
questions

Is Posi-Shell accepted as daily cover in Australia?

Use of an alternative daily cover is governed by each site’s licence and the relevant state regulator. Posi-Shell is already used at landfills in Australia and overseas. We can help you assess your approval pathway and prepare supporting technical information.

How much can you cover in a day?

A two-person crew typically covers 500 to 1,500 m² per day, depending on access, slope, formulation and application thickness.

How long does the cover last?

Daily cover formulations are designed to last until the next day’s tipping. Intermediate formulations are harder and thicker, and with durability enhancers can remain erosion-resistant for a year or more.

Can Posi-Shell help with hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) odour?

Yes. A continuous shell over exposed waste reduces the surface that odour can escape from, and it can be applied quickly when complaints or notices arrive. Where the H₂S comes from gas generated in the waste, we can also assess landfill gas collection as part of a wider odour control plan.

How does it help with a subsurface hotspot or landfill fire?

Hotspots need oxygen, which usually enters through cracked or thin cover and over-drawn gas wells. Sealing the surface to limit air intrusion is the most common control method. Posi-Shell can be sprayed over the affected area to starve the hotspot of oxygen, alongside temperature and gas monitoring and adjustments to gas extraction. For an active fire, always follow your site emergency plan and fire authority advice.

What’s the difference between Posi-Shell and Posi-Lock?

Posi-Shell is primarily a landfill cover system. Posi-Lock is a mineral-based containment membrane typically used on contaminated sites, stockpiles and erosion-prone areas. Both are spray-applied with the same type of equipment.

Can we trial it before committing?

Yes. We recommend an on-site trial so your team and regulator can see performance under your conditions. Get in touch to arrange one.
